About Mike Science, startups, finance.

Technology entrepreneur and private investor.

My name is Michael Halls-Moore. I am a technology entrepreneur and private investor. Originally an aeronautical engineer in academia, I made the transition to the technology startup world where I have created web businesses with total visitors in excess of 10 million.

"Michael Halls-Moore is a man on a mission."
- Matt Brown, Editor, The Londonist

I'm currently the founder of QuarkGluon, a business consultancy helping financial technology startups with formation, funding, development and marketing. If you are interested in a business consultation, please email mike@quarkgluon.com. QuarkGluon also produces financial products, the most prominent of which is QuantStart, a leading resource portal for quantitative analysts.

Background

I graduated in 2005 from the University of Warwick with a first-class Masters degree in Mathematics, then proceeded to Imperial College London to gain a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering. My thesis was on the efficiency of hypersonic airbreathing engines at off-design conditions. During my PhD course I started BuyMeToTheStars.com, which was an early incarnation of crowdfunding (before the term existed!), to help me gain a ticket on a suborbital spaceflight.

After graduating in 2008 I co-founded PopJam, an angel-funded social network. In December 2008 we launched SockAndAwe, a global website hit parodying George Bush, which was later acquired. In 2010 I returned to my mathematical roots and went to work for a startup hedge fund, Oxalyst Systems LLP, where we applied statistical data analysis, trading techniques and portfolio management to internet data. Since then I have been concentrating on a portfolio of financial, social media and political businesses.

Science, space exploration, technology, finance and entrepreneurship are my passions. I started this blog in 2009 to share my knowledge of these topics with others.

Other

Outside of entrepreneurship, I thoroughly enjoy mathematics, science and space exploration. In particular, I enjoy space propulsion engineering and am currently in the early stages of designing a low-thrust liquid-fuel rocket engine as well as developing computational fluid dynamics software, called GodunovSPH to help with the rocketry design.

If I'm not creating web businesses or designing rocket engines, I can be found climbing mountains, mostly in the UK, but sometimes in the Alps.
